Life as a Social Justice Journalist

I don’t chase headlines — I chase humanity.

My work lives where policy meets people, where silence meets truth, where justice meets Florida’s front porch.

For nearly two decades, I’ve reported the stories that shape life in this state — stories of power, inequity, resilience, and renewal. From Sarasota’s segregated past to the future of Black literature, art, wellness and belonging, I’ve learned that journalism isn’t just about facts. It’s about feeling. It’s about being brave enough to care out loud.

In this conversation at WSLR + Fogartyville, I unpack what it means to report news in a state that’s constantly redefining freedom — and how I’ve built a career grounded in purpose, community, and truth-telling.

WHAT DRIVES ME

I believe journalism is more than witnessing — it’s lifting voices, uncovering power, and shaping futures. From Sarasota to Tampa Bay and beyond, I center stories that often go unheard: the matriarchs sustaining our communities, the wellness narratives of Black women, the local officials and grassroots leaders forging change.

My Reporting Philosophy

  • Context + Compassion: Every piece must carry depth — the “what,” yes, but also the “why” and the “what next.”

  • Community as Co-creator: The people I cover are not subjects. They’re collaborators. Their lived experience shapes the story.

  • Unflinching & Fair: I report with rigor and integrity, especially when the story is uncomfortable. I believe accountability matters; fairness doesn’t mean sidestepping tough truths.

  • Wellness-informed Lens: As a wellness educator and journalist, I understand that well-being is integral — it frames how trauma, healing, and power play out in every community.

Every story I write starts with one question: Who needs to be heard?

I report for the people living in the margins of the map — the mothers, the organizers, the artists, the neighbors holding it all together when systems fall apart. My lens is rooted in justice, but my compass is always compassion.

Because telling the truth is not just my job. It’s my offering.
